Ruse and Sons Quality Local Butchers

I am the fifth generation to have run the family business of Ruse & Son, a quality local butcher located in Long Melford, Suffolk. We celebrated our 150th anniversary in 2010.


Founded by my great great grandfather Teverson Ruse in 1860, we are still trading from the same premises in Long Melford, which he purchased for the paltry sum of just £400. We are unique butchers in Suffolk as we have our own small abattoir at the rear of the premises. Most of our meat we sell in the shop is indeed slaughtered in the abattoir and furthermore is locally sourced, with no animal having to travel more than 10 miles to the premises. We take pride in our humane approach to animal welfare and our trading policy can be summarised in one word - quality.


Our customers know all about our high quality meat and other produce, and they reward our dedication with their loyalty. Our staff work to very high standards, and their eye for detail and attitude is second to none. We believe in a friendly approach, and our staff are genuinely willing to help, inform or just have a friendly chat – as long as the queue isn’t too long!


Many tourists enter our shop saying, “I wish that where we live, we had a shop like yours.” We have had to change over the years, for example, we now sell a selection of cheeses, cooked meats and locally produced jams and chutneys. All our sausages are freshly made on the premises. We cook our own hams, which are cured from our own pigs. Check our special offers for some great deals.


What of the future? I’m positive that selling the finest meat, sourced from local farms, which are slaughtered in a stress-free way will always attract discerning customers. No supermarket can match this level of quality.
